This Way Ahead is a rigorous 14-week job-readiness and career exploration program for students ages 16-18 that is generously sponsored by Gap, Inc.

Join This Way Ahead to:
• gain confidence in your ability to set and achieve your goals
• pursue education beyond a high school diploma
• increase your confidence and leadership skills
• become more independent and learn how to manage your money, and
• improve your communication and customer service skills

Our Workshops Bring it All Together. EHSS staff and Gap and Old Navy managers lead fun and interactive workshops that will help you gain the skills and confidence you need for your future.

In the program, you'll learn how to apply for jobs, fill out applications, create your resume, and practice interviewing one-on-one and with a group. In our workshops, you'll receive customer service training from experts and you'll practice the techniques you'll need to interact successfully with customers, co-workers, and managers.

You'll develop skills that you'll use throughout your life, from exploring careers and college options to learning what it takes to handle your finances. You will also get a chance to go behind the scenes at the Old Navy flagship store.

This Way Ahead is currently offered one time per year. Applications to the program are available in November and December.



One-on-One Coaching and Support. EHSS staff is here for you with one-on-one job coaching and guidance to make sure you're prepared and confident your first day on the job. If you participate in This Way Ahead, you'll also receive a modest paid stipend every two weeks and a complimentary Muni pass.

Interview for Gap and Old Navy Internships. Upon successfully completing the 14-week program, you will have the opportunity to interview for possible four-month paid internships at Gap and Old Navy stores where you'll acquire valuable customer service and retail experience. You'll also be eligible to use our members-only Job Bank, apply to our Summer Employment Programs, access our College and Career Counseling services, or join our Youth Ambassador Program.


This Way Ahead taught me about being professional -- what it takes to get a job and keep it, how to talk to customers, co-workers, and managers. You have to learn what to do on an interview, how to create first impressions.

I was selected to intern at a Gap store, and now I'm an official employee. I cashier, assist customers and suggest items, and even help new employees.

Being part of this program really changed me. Before, to be honest, I really didn't care about school, and most of the people I hung out with didn't have jobs. Things are completely different. I'm working two jobs, and want to go into the medical field. I see what's important now.
